Dave Barrett was a young politician on the way up….fast. In 1970 he was brash young MLA from Coquitlam, BC but within two years he became leader of the New Democratic Party and then Premier of British Columbia. But his rise to the top of west coast politics was short-lived….in less than 3 years his government was turfed out of office but not before he established programs and policies that still exist today. His passion for politics and his belief in the parliamentary system have never wavered despite an unsatisfying time in Ottawa and a failed run at the leadership of the federal NDP.

Unlike Barrett, Gerry Cantwell’s life was spent in relative obscurity as lighthouse keeper at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. For 140 years, a Cantwell has kept the light at the entrance to the St. John’s harbour…and in 1970, the last of the line took on the tradition. But Gerry expected to be the only one of the six brothers and sisters who would be able to remain in Newfoundland. Theirs was expected to be the quintessential Atlantic Canadian story…young hopes dashed against the rocks of economic reality, yet the Cantwells beat the odds.
